THE BUILDING
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Floors - Divided into two floors and a basement (in fact a semi-basement, for having an opening toward the street), the building is four thousand square meters approximately. Its entrance is at the corner, through a majestic bronze door made in Portugal. A great marble stairway leads the visitor to the vestibule preceding the central great hall, where the bank windows are.

This great hall can be compared to a cathedral. It has a double pier 14 meters high, natural illumination through a big skylight and, on both sides, a colonnade interpolated by four cast iron bank windows. The floor is made of hydraulic mosaic, whose complexity of drawings and precision of colors demonstrate its superior quality.

This large area is limited by what would be the altar of the bank: the safe. Inside it, there are cast iron closets, with lacework-like elements on the doors, and a helical stairway for access to the basement.

At the central great hall, two lateral wings rise, built on the second floor, where the bank administration would be. The former courtroom is located on the left wing, in a room richly ornamented. On the background wall, a great painting of 1901 by Antônio Parreiras called "Disloyalty" stands out [it refers to a revolt for the independence of the Colony in the late 18th century]. This artist signed other two paintings of the same series - "The departure" and "The arrival" - placed in other rooms of the second floor.
