REFERENDUMS
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

| Parliamentarian system | Firearms and ammunition

Referendum on the prohibition of firearms and ammunition trade (2005) - In 2005, there was a new consultation to the people. Law No. 10826/2003, nationally known as Disarmament Statute, decided that the prohibition of firearms and ammunition trade in the whole country depended on the popular approval through a referendum in order to have vigor.

On the occasion, two parliamentary fronts were registered before the Directing Board of the National Congress to represent both options: the Parliamentary Front for a Brazil without Weapons, headed by Senator Renan Calheiros, and the Parliamentary Front for the Right of Self-Defense, headed by Deputy Alberto Fraga. On October 23rd, 95,375,824 voters went to the polls. The "no" option (against the prohibition) won with 59,109,285 votes, while the "yes" option (for the prohibition) obtained 33,333,045 votes, in the biggest computerized popular consultation in the history of the world.
